The river that runs the length of the biblical heartland, and a boundary charged with meaning: Israel crosses it to enter the Promised Land under Joshua; Elijah and Elisha part its waters; Naaman the Syrian is healed by bathing in it; and John baptises in it, Jesus among the crowds. The river itself is real, traceable geography, still flowing (though much reduced) today.

What the evidence confirmsThe Jordan and its role as the great boundary and crossing-point of the land are plain historical geography, the setting of many biblical episodes.
What it does not proveThe miraculous crossings (Joshua, Elijah, Elisha) are narratives beyond what the riverbed can confirm; the river attests the setting, not the events.
