Bethsaida was the hometown of Peter, Andrew and Philip — but no one is quite sure where it is. Two mounds compete. Et-Tell, dug for decades, has an Iron-Age gate and Roman remains, yet sits over a mile from the present shore. El-Araj, right at the water's edge, has yielded a Roman-era fishing village and a Byzantine church, and its backers argue it fits the Gospels better. Both hold genuine ancient remains; the identification is a live scholarly fight.
