When missionaries of the Gossner mission reached Ranchi in 1845, response was slow — until, through the 1850s, whole villages of the Oraon, Munda and Ho peoples began turning to Christ together. Persecution and the upheavals of 1857 scattered the young church, yet it regathered and grew into one of the largest Christian populations in India. It is the story of tribal peoples, long pushed to the margins, embracing the faith as communities and finding in it a new dignity.
