In a Roman garrison town on the Euphrates, buried when the city fell about AD 256, archaeologists found an ordinary courtyard house that had been quietly remodelled for Christian use — a room for the assembly and a small baptistery painted with the earliest datable Christian scenes, among them the Good Shepherd and the women at the empty tomb. It is the oldest Christian church building known: a snapshot of how believers met and baptised before Constantine's basilicas, when a congregation was still a house.
