Daniel 1 — Daniel Purposed In His Heart

Summary

Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem; the king of Babylon brought certain of the children of Israel to teach them the learning and tongue of the Chaldeans. Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat. God brought Daniel into favour with the prince of the eunuchs. Prove thy servants ten days. Their countenances appeared fairer. As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. The king found them ten times better than all the magicians.

Key verse

“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.”

— Daniel 1:8

Outline
  1. v.1-7 Daniel and friends taken to Babylon
  2. v.8-16 The ten-day test
  3. v.17-21 God's gift of wisdom
Verse-by-verse
8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Purposed in his heart. The decision was made before the test arrived. Resolve in the heart precedes obedience in the action.

Requested. He did not rebel; he asked. Faithfulness can be combined with courteous negotiation.

17 As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

The fruit of fidelity. God gave them what no Babylonian curriculum could. The faithful young men out-learned their teachers because God gave the gift.

A model for Christian education. Compete on God's terms — fidelity first, learning follows.

Application

Verse 8 trains decision-making. Make the moral commitments in advance, before the actual pressure. Daniel's heart was already decided before the platter arrived; yours can be too.

Christ in this chapter

Daniel's wisdom from God previews the wisdom that is Christ Himself (1 Corinthians 1:30). The young man's purpose-in-heart against defilement is a shadow of the Saviour who was undefiled (Hebrews 7:26).
