In 1321 four Franciscan friars, led by Thomas of Tolentino, were put to death near Thana on the west coast after a disputation over the faith turned against them. Jordanus of Séverac, who had journeyed with them, gathered their remains — and stayed on in India, becoming a few years later its first Latin bishop. Their deaths are among the best-documented episodes of the medieval Latin church reaching India.
