On Christmas Eve 1905 a group of Indian Christians — among them V. S. Azariah and K. T. Paul — founded the National Missionary Society, run and paid for entirely by Indians to carry the gospel across their own land. Its principle was simple and pointed: Indian money, Indian workers, Indian leadership. It marked the moment the Indian church set out to evangelise India itself, no longer as the junior partner of a foreign mission.
