American Baptists Nathan Brown and Miles Bronson reached Assam in the late 1830s and threw themselves into its languages — printing the first Assamese Scriptures and compiling a dictionary that helped Assamese survive and flourish as a written tongue when officials had tried to replace it with Bengali. Their mission, and the Welsh and Baptist work that followed across the north-eastern hills, planted churches whose descendants are largely Christian today.
